Horry Co family hopes churches become more autism-friendly

(WMBF) - Families with autistic children are hoping to raise awareness with the help of churches. In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, Coalition of Autism Parents and Self Advocates of Horry County will host a virtual event on Saturday, May 1. During the event, people will hear from Pastor Lamar Hardwick, who’s autistic. He’ll be talking about disability and diversity. Organizer David Warner has an autistic son and said his family will reach out to churches to see if they have autism programs. He said nine times out of ten times, they don’t.

New Study Suggests Strong Link Between Autism and Substance Use Risk Silvia Pittman © The Mighty Man with dark hair, glasses and a black T-shirt stands with his arms folded against a black background What happened: A new study out of Taiwan reveals that some people on the autism spectrum may be at a higher risk for substance use. Researchers looked at data from the country’s health insurance program to look at whether autism was a risk factor for developing substance use disorder. According to the published findings, data from more than 6,000 patients compared to a control group of neurotypical people showed autistic people were at a higher risk of substance use but the risk jumped for those who also had behavioral issues and did not take psychotropic medications. Additionally, these combined characteristics were associated with a higher risk of death. The study indicates the need for additional support across the lifespan for autistic people.
