Larimer County reached a milestone of sorts this week with no new COVID-19 outbreaks reported at area businesses or long-term care facilities, the first time since the pandemic began in mid-March 2020.
Part of that may be attributable to the holiday weekend, higher vaccination rates and a June 1 change in the state s definition of an outbreak.
Previously, an outbreak was defined as “two or more people who are confirmed cases of COVID-19 in a workplace/facility, with onset within 14 days, or one confirmed and two or more probable cases of COVID-19 in a workplace/facility, with onset within 14 days,” according to the state’s outbreak page.

On a recent Saturday morning, the local Boys and Girls Club in Fort Collins hosted an all-out vaccine party in its gymnasium. A mariachi band serenaded patients. Volunteers served fresh churros and horchata.
But behind the cinnamon sugar and celebratory mood was a small army of community organizers with an urgent mission: Get as many Hispanic and Latino residents as possible immunized against COVID-19, and help close wide disparities within Colorado’s ongoing vaccine rollout.
“We’ve seen the struggle of our community in the last year,” said Jesús Castro, an organizer with the group Fuerza Latina. “So we wanted to make something nice, like a reunion.”
Larimer County saw 25 new outbreaks of COVID-19 this week, and all but two had four or fewer cases, following off one of the most active months since the November surge.
April had 95 outbreaks, according to the Larimer County Department of Health and Environment. November had the most outbreaks in the past six months with 104.
The health department considers an outbreak to be two or more cases within a 14-day period.
Larimer County has also seen a slight increase in outbreaks at residential living facilities, primarily among unvaccinated health care workers, said Kori Wilford, spokesperson for county health department.
The outbreaks have been extremely small in terms of case counts, two to four, Wilford said. When residents are infected, the severity of illness is dramatically different from pre-vaccination outbreaks.
