Inflation continues to rise in Laos amid Covid-19 crisis

The year-on-year inflation rate continued to rise in Laos last month amid economic distress triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the Lao Statistics Bureau, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 114.42 points last month, indicating an inflation rate of 2.48 per cent year-on-year. This was up from the 1.91 per cent recorded in February.
Economists are concerned that the interruption of economic activities by a second wave of novel coronavirus infections and lockdown measures imposed in the capital Vientiane and other provinces could further affect prices of products in local markets.
VIENTIANE, March 14 (Vientiane Times/ANN): The government has launched e-civil registration and vital statistics (eCRVS) systems and District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) to ensure more accurate population registration.
The systems will be shared and operated by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Home Affairs, which signed agreements on their use in Vientiane on Wednesday.
Representing the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Deputy Director General of the Citizen Management Department, Mr Vandy Chanthalideth, signed the agreement with the Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health’s Planning and Cooperation Department, Dr Soutthanou Nanthanontry.
The signing was witnessed by the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Thongchanh Manixay, and Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Bounfeng Phoummalaisith.

Micro-businesses dominate Laos’ enterprises, survey says

Laos, as a least developed country, is still largely dominated by microbusinesses, which account for 94.2 per cent of all enterprises in the country, the results of the latest survey revealed on February 16 show.
A total of 133,997 enterprises recorded their operations in 2019, an increase of 9,124 compared to 2013, according to the third economic census conducted by the Lao Statistics Bureau in 2019-2020.
The total figure comprised 126,168 microbusinesses, 6,600 small enterprises (4.9 per cent), 954 medium enterprises (0.7 per cent) and 276 large enterprises (0.2 per cent), according to the survey.
