From the Mayor s Desk: Doing our part to conserve energy and water | Comment

As you may have heard or read, on July 9, 2021, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a drought emergency for Santa Clara County. The Santa Clara Valley Water Board of Directors has also declared a water shortage emergency for the county and called for a mandatory 15% reduction in water use from 2019 water use levels. At the same time, due to the extreme heat in California, wildfires in Oregon and the high demand for electricity, the California Independent System Operator issued a Flex Alert last week. The Flex Alert encouraged California residents to take immediate steps to conserve energy to help reduce the strain on the power grid, limit possible power outages and minimize the risk of local wildfires.

Other Voices: Context needed when discussing RHNA numbers

I saw the Los Altos City Council discussion of the Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) appeal, and heard public comments that were described in the June 30 article in the Town Crier. The article made me think further on the discussion. The RHNA appeal is a good idea, but Iâd like to see a better context presented to the public as to the reasoning behind it. There is a thick soup of new laws and regulations being slowly simmered in Sacramento. The motivation seems to be this idea that cities are inhibiting housing growth, which I donât see at all. Just saying that Los Altos is appealing its quota sounds terrible. So here are some ideas that should be factored into the city response to RHNA and the lawsuit pending about the local RHNA process in the Bay Area.

New Los Altos Community Center set to open doors Oct 2

City officials plan to officially open the doors of the new Los Altos Community Center to the public during a grand-opening celebration 2 p.m. Oct. 2. Mayor Neysa Fligor, Los Altos City Council members and others instrumental to the projectâs success will unveil the addition to the civic center, followed by various activities and tours showcasing all the new community center has to offer. âThis project is a culmination of many years of hard work and commitment from residents and city leaders and staff,â Fligor said. âI hope residents will join us for the grand opening and, more importantly, utilize the beautiful space and participate in the programs offered at the community center.â
