The abstract painter uses architectural drawings and photographs to create works on a grand scale
The artist Julie Mehretu, 51, likes to work on a grand scale. A silent short film by the British artist Tacita Dean shows Ms. Mehretu at work on her monumental painting “Mural” at the New York headquarters of Goldman Sachs in 2009, high up on a cherry picker as she grapples with a canvas 80 feet long and 23 feet high. “The scale of the Goldman Sachs painting was the reason why I decided to take that challenge on,” Ms Mehretu says. “It was scary, but exhilarating and wonderful to do.”

.-The Momentary announced the debut of Sarah Cain: In Nature (on view February 12 to May 30) and Diana Al-Hadid: Ash in the Trade Winds (on view March 5 to June 13), as well as the opening of Derrick Adams: Sanctuary (on view February 23 to June 6). All three visual art exhibitions are free to view, no tickets necessary.

The Los Angeles-based artist is known for expanding the traditional notions of collage and assemblage in a multidisciplinary practice of painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography that synthesizes ancient epics, futuristic narratives, and contemporary realities. The resulting works resemble theatrical landscapes that delve into the artists psyche, reflecting Hundleys desire to create a new personal mythology.
