Several new exhibits at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art have not yet been seen by the public, even though the exhibits were installed early last year. They had the misfortune to be readied just before the pandemic shuttered the museum’s doors last spring.
LACMA officials are eagerly waiting for the governmental go-aheads to open. (Outdoor exhibits and grounds have been allowed to be open to the public for some time.)
And when these shows finally open, things will be a little bit different. We’ll be wearing masks, for one, and socially distancing. One-way paths will be marked through the galleries, and doors are now equipped with touchless sensors.

A year after the Covid-19 pandemic forced museums across the US to shut down, many are now greeting visitors at limited capacity after a loosening of wildly divergent state and city restrictions. California, however, has been an outlier: its museums have remained closed as they had been, with a few exceptions, since the first wave of Covid-19. Still, some relief seems to be on the horizon, as evidenced by Tuesday s announcement that San Francisco museums could reopen this week with limited attendance.
At the end of January, Governor Gavin Newsom relaxed some of the state’s health safeguards, allowing restaurants to resume outdoor dining and other businesses such as zoos, gyms and even hair and nail salons to reopen at limited capacity while museums were firmly excluded.
Biography
Richard Misrach is an American artist known for his large-format landscape photographs of iconic American places like the Golden Gate Bridge, the Mississippi River, and the U.S.-Mexico border. In his ongoing
Desert Cantos series, Misrach explores his interest in the deserts of the American Southwest. “It does seem that the severity of the landscape sets cultural artifacts off in dramatic relief,” he said of the region. “The desert has always provided rich material for literature and the visual arts, from the Bible to science-fiction films, probably because it epitomizes the extremes of the human condition.” Born on July 11, 1949 in Los Angeles, CA, he graduated with a BA in psychology from the University of California in 1971. Often honing in on environmentalist concerns, Misrach sometimes captures the negative effects that humans have had on nature. His mid-career retrospective, “Crimes and Splendors: The Desert Cantos of Richard Misrach,” was mounted by the
