New Strain Of Coronavirus Could Be Responsible For California s Surge

December 28, 2020 A new strain of coronavirus could be responsible for the ongoing case surge in Los Angeles County and other parts of California. State Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly says this new mutation of the virus is much more contagious than the current one.   This strain of the virus, which was first detected in the United Kingdom, has not yet surfaced in California. But officials are on high alert for it. The Los Angeles County Public Health Department has asked all local testing labs to probe swabs for a gene detection pattern present in the new strain. Dr. Ghaly says this variation does not appear to be more deadly than the current strain. USC Virologist Dr. Paula Cannon believes the coronavirus vaccines now being distributed are strong enough to protect against multiple strains, including this new, more contagious one.
