Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is certainly younger than 65. And he isn’t a healthcare worker.
But the mayor is on the front lines of the pandemic response, according to aides. So Garcetti, who turns 50 next week, received a COVID-19 vaccination last Thursday.
Garcetti spokesman Alex Comisar said the mayor got his first dose after he spent five days at Dodger Stadium helping with the vaccination effort and “directly interacting with hundreds of Angelenos each day.”
“The medical personnel strongly recommended that he receive the vaccine as they have recommended and provided for other field staff and volunteers at the site who have close contact with clients,” Comisar said.
Los Angeles County Public Health officials on Wednesday confirmed 307 new deaths and 6,917 new cases of confirmed COVID-19 countywide, and Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital in Valencia late Tuesday reported its 113th COVID fatality since the pandemic began.
Nine COVID patients have died at Henry Mayo since Friday, bringing the hospital’s total to 40 fatalities so far in January, according to spokesman Patrick Moody.
The Santa Clarita Valley has reached a total of 23,396 cases 162 more than Tuesday and 196 deaths since L.A. county’s first confirmed COVID-19 infection on January 26, 2020.
Countywide, as of January 22, the seven-day average of daily positive cases was 6,564, down from the peak of more than 15,000 cases on January 8, Public Health officials noted in their Wednesday update.
Cloth masks
There has been some debate about whether cloth masks offer enough protection. Experts say they are definitely better than not wearing a mask at all, but there may be better options.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently recommended that people wear masks with two or more layers of breathable fabric.
If wearing a cloth mask, the CDC says to look for these qualities:
Tightly woven fabrics, such as cotton and cotton blends
Breathable material
Less effective types of masks are:
Made of loosely woven fabrics, such as a loose knit
Made of material that’s difficult to breathe through (like plastic or leather)
