The 1967 Oakland Raiders were the first great team in franchise history.
The Raiders were 6-8, 2-12, and 1-13 in their first three seasons before Al Davis came to town as a coach and general manager and led the Silver and Black to 10-4, 5-7-1, and 8-5-1 records before leaving to become commissioner of the American Football League in 1967 during the AFL-NFL war.
John Rauch became the Raiders coach and they went 8-5-1 in 1966 before Davis returned as Managing General Partner in 1967.

Tackle Art Shell and guard Gene Upshaw of the Oakland Raiders were not joined at the hip. It only seemed that way.
Shell and Upshaw held down the left side of the Raiders line, which is considered by many to the best of all-time, for more than 10 seasons and were the driving force behind the Silver and Black’s first two Super Bowl victories.
“The Raiders had a great running team back then and Gene and Art were the reason for it,” said Joe Collier, former defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos and architect of “The Orange Crush” defense.

When Jim Plunkett came to the Oakland Raiders in 1978, he was beaten up physically and beaten down mentally after seven seasons with the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers.
Nobody who saw him would have believed that he would quarterback the Raiders to two Super Bowl victories in the coming seasons.
Managing General Partner Al Davis signed Plunkett and told him to simply take care of himself for a while and he didn’t even practice with the team at first because they were set at quarterback with Kenny “The Snake” Stabler and David Humm.

The Oakland-Los Angeles-Las Vegas Raiders have had some outstanding running backs through the years, from Clem Daniels during the 1960s to Josh Jacobs the last two seasons.
However, the best of all was Marcus Allen, who played 11 seasons with the Silver and Black before spending the last five years of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Ron Wolf, who was Raiders scouting executive for 25 years before going onto to more greatness as general manager of the Green Bay Packers and is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, went one step further.
