Essential California: Is L A Mayor Eric Garcetti on the way out?

Monday, May 10. I’m Kimi Yoshino, and I’m writing from Los Angeles. L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti is on the short list for a post in the Biden administration as the U.S. ambassador to India, and questions are swirling about what might happen next. As Times reporters David Zahniser and Dakota Smith noted, “At Los Angeles City Hall, everything is suddenly up in the air.” A mayoral election is already on tap for next year, but if Garcetti were selected for a new job, it would be up to the City Council to choose an interim mayor. Editorial: L A Mayor Garcetti: Please stay, finish the job

Print Once again, speculation is swirling that Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti may quit before the end of his term and take a job in the Biden administration. This time, Garcetti is said to be in line for an ambassadorship, possibly to India. This is all conjecture, of course. Garcetti, an early supporter of Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, was considered for federal appointments during the presidential transition but remained in L.A. He should stay now as well, and finish the job he set out to do when he was elected in 2013. To be sure, it would be hard to say “no” if the president asked you to serve your country. India is a pivotal bulwark in an increasingly uncertain Asia as the United States tries to counter China’s rising hegemony. These efforts, once anathema among some homeless service providers, are becoming more widely accepted as unsheltered homelessness has grown and government officials deal with a pandemic that has made placing people in large shelters dangerous.

Californians Can t Afford Rent - It s Still Too Damn High!

AFFORDABLE HOUSING-Housing Is A Human Right has compared market-rate rent prices to what residents are earning in several California cities and the findings aren’t surprising: the rent is still too damn high. Data shows that the Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Oakland metro areas all have rents that are taking massive chunks out of people’s paychecks. Politicians must urgently move forward with a multi-pronged strategy that includes stronger tenant protections, improved rent regulations, and more affordable housing.   Housing Is A Human Right examined market-rate rents for the metros areas of Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, and Oakland. We used data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, comparing rent prices to per capita income in each locality. The results show that Californians continue to be rent burdened, drowning in sky-high rents charged by corporate landlords, major real estate companies, and predato
