Five veterans honored with Quilts of Valor by: Sophia Walsh - Jul. 1, 2021 Top News Five veterans were honored Thursday for their service during a Quilts of Valor ceremony at the Lincoln County Historical Museum. The Heartland Nebraska Quilts of Valor ceremony was held under the museum’s gazebo, where family and friends gathered to honor the veterans and their service. The first to be honored was Lawrence Mora Jr., who served in the U.S Navy. Mora enlisted in the Navy in 1985 and attended boot camp in San Diego, Calif. before attending the Radioman A school, where he graduated in 1986.

Flag Day celebration: Buffalo Bill Historical Park by: George Lauby - Jun. 14, 2021 Top News A display of 23 flags belonging to Linda and Gene Tacey hung on the outside of the south wall of the big barn at the Buffalo Bill Historical Park for Flag Day Monday, giving a glimpse of the history that led to the independence of the United States. The flags of Spain, France and England were on display, dating back to the1400s and earlier, representing the European explorers who first came to North America. Flags from the Continental Army, the Rhode Island Regiment, George Washington’s Liberty Tree, and the Grand Union are in the collection. The Grand Union flag preceded the flag with a circle of 13 stars, known as the Betsy Ross flag. After that, there were flags on display with 15, 27, 33, 34, 35, 45 and 48 stars.

Record setting Giving Day, playground No. 1 recipient by: The North Platte Bulletin - May. 7, 2021 Top News On May 6, contributions to North Platte Giving Day totaled $371,000, a sharp increase over the day’s total a year ago which at that time was a record-setting amount. The most donations by far went to the Community Build Playground fund for an elaborate playground in Centennial Park. They raised a total of $104,000, which included $14,000 in matching funds. A building date will be announced soon, organizers said.   Overall, Giving Day is in its sixth year. Organizers said 1,425 donors contributed to 71 organizations this year. A year ago, the total donations on Giving Day was $265,036. Later donations boosted the total to $287,826.  When the day ended, the total donations amounted to $265,936; but later, more donations arrived, adding another $22,000.
