LYNCHBURG, Va. – We’re continuing the kick-off to our “In Your Town” series, where the first stop on the road is Lynchburg.
Wednesday marked 76 years since a Hill City hero was credited with saving dozens of Americans.
Desmond Doss inspired the movie ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ for his bravery in Okinawa during World War Two.
The Lynchburg native was a shipbuilder and volunteered to serve as a U.S. Army medic.

Roy Farrar planned to celebrate with his father, Tuskeegee Airman Alfred Farrar, for his 100th birthday.
“I kept telling him that he had a date on the 25th, and that we would bundle him up good and snug so we could come out,” Roy said.
The elder Farrar didn’t live to see the ceremony.
He died a week ago, so Steve Bozeman and the Lynchburg Veterans Council transformed the troop rally into a memorial service.

Lynchburg hero and Tuskegee Airman Alfred Farrar has passed away, just days before his 100th birthday (LAVC)
LYNCHBURG, Va. – A Tuskegee Airman who lived in Lynchburg has passed away, according to the Lynchburg Area Veterans Council.
Alfred T. Farrar served in World War II and died on Thursday night, days before his 100th birthday on Dec. 26.
The veterans council is still set to honor his life and service at Monument Terrace on Christmas Day.
