Bureau offering fire department grants

Cass-Morgan Farm Bureau is accepting applications for a $10,000 annual grant intended to help support fire departments and fire protection districts in maintaining the equipment necessary to better respond to farm and other rural emergencies.
Applications must include a letter explaining how awarded grant funds would be spent. Applications may be mailed to the bureau’s office at 1152 Tendick St. in Jacksonville or dropped off there by Sept. 1.
All fire departments and fire protection districts in Cass and Morgan counties are eligible to apply for the grant funding, and grant recipients will be notified by Oct. 1.

Rain throughout the year usually is a good thing for farmers, but unusually heavy rains that hit west-central Illinois beginning last week could cause some problems for farmers’ crops.
The weather system that moved through the region dumped more than 5 inches of rain in many areas, saturating the ground and leaving it soft and wet.
Farmer Jon Freeman said the amount of water that was dumped on the region could present a problem, especially if the trend continues.
