UCLA to launch program for Taiwan studies in global context

Los Angeles, Feb. 22 (CNA) The University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) recently announced receipt of a US$2 million donation from Taiwan s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), some of which will be used to establish a program dedicated to the study of Taiwan in a global context.
Of the total US$2 million given to UCLA s Asia Pacific Center, US$800,000 will be used to create a program on Taiwan in the World, while the remaining US$1.2 million will go toward establishing an endowment fund to help permanently support the Taiwan Studies Program, the university said in a press release last week.

Los Angeles, Feb. 19 (CNA) When NASA s Perseverance rover successfully touched down on the surface of Mars on Thursday after a seven-month, 480 million-kilometer journey, a Taiwan-born engineer and remote pilot was preparing to guide it through its first movements on the red planet.
Yen Jeng (嚴正), a 61-year-old graduate of National Tsing Hua University in Hsinchu and a 20-year veteran in NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is now taking part in his fourth Mars exploration mission with the agency s Robot Interfaces and Visualization team, this time as its leader.
In an interview with CNA, Yen described his expectations for the next few months, which he characterized as living on Earth in Mars time.
Taiwan-born astronaut to make second trip into space in 2022: NASA

Los Angeles, Feb. 12 (CNA) A Taiwan-born U.S. astronaut has been assigned to serve as commander of the Crew Dragon spacecraft that will fly to the International Space Station next year, marking his second trip into space, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Friday.
The 48-year-old Kjell Lindgren will command the fourth crew rotation flight of the craft that will launch in 2022 from a Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA said in a press release.
LA Film Critics Association honors Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien

Los Angeles, Dec. 20 (CNA) The Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) has chosen iconic Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢) as one of the winners of this year s Career Achievement Awards, crediting him as one of the world s most influential filmmakers.
In a statement on its website, LAFCA said that Hou emerged as a leading figure in Taiwanese cinema in the 1980s and 90s and is now widely recognized as one of the world s greatest, most influential filmmakers.
The features he has written and directed over his four-decade career include A Time to Live and a Time to Die, The Puppetmaster, Goodbye South, Goodbye, Flowers of Shanghai, Millennium Mambo, Three Times and Flight of the Red Balloon, LAFCA said.
