Taipei, May 19 (CNA) A U.S. Navy destroyer transited the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, the fifth time a U.S. battleship has navigated the waterway separating Taiwan and China since U.S. President Joe Biden assumed office in January. The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG 54) conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit May 18 (local time) in accordance with international law. The ship s transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, the U.S. 7th Fleet said in a statement.
67-year-old Taiwanese man attacked in L.A. in suspected hate crime

Los Angeles, May 15 (CNA) A 67-year-old Lyft driver from Taiwan was attacked and robbed recently at a gas station near Los Angeles in a suspected hate crime, as the attacker kept yelling go back to China.
The victim was identified as Paul Liao and the incident happened in the evening of May 10 in El Monte, a city with many Asian residents.
The incident was captured on dashcam.
The 2-minute video, provided by Liao s relatives to CNA, shows that the robber entered Liao s car, took his cellphone and about US$1,500 in cash, before attempting to drive the car away.

Los Angeles, April 24 (CNA) Taiwan-born engineer Yen Jeng (嚴正), a member of NASA s Perseverance rover team, shared on Saturday some behind the scenes stories of the Ingenuity helicopter, which recently completed two flights on Mars.
Yen, a 20-year veteran at NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is currently head of the agency s Robot Interfaces and Visualization team. The team is in charge of preparing the computer code that guides Perseverance s movements on Mars.
During a virtual speech on Saturday, Yen said that the center of attention for the Perseverance rover mission has been the Ingenuity helicopter, which hitchhiked its way to Mars on the rover s belly.
