With the scrub typhus season approaching, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday advised people to cover up when sweeping tombs or doing other activities outdoors, as the fatality rate can be as high as 60 percent without proper treatment.
Cases of scrub typhus usually begin to increase in April and reach their peak in May or June, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Center Deputy Director Guo Hung-wei (郭宏偉) said.
The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) yesterday reported this year’s first indigenous typhoid fever case in Taiwan.
The patient is a teenage girl who lives in central Taiwan, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Center Director Guo Hung-wei (郭宏偉) said.
The girl developed a fever, abdominal pain and diarrhea on Feb. 2, but she was diagnosed with viral gastroenteritis when she sought medical treatment.
The fever did not abate, and she was hospitalized on Feb. 8, before being discharged on Feb. 11, Guo said.

People were urged to wash their hands more frequently after the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) yesterday reported an increase in the number of cases of diarrhea over the past two weeks.
CDC Epidemic Intelligence Center Director Guo Hung-wei (郭宏偉) told a news conference that 138,462 cases of diarrhea were reported last week, adding that 87 clusters of diarrhea cases have been reported nationwide in the past four weeks, with 86 percent of the clusters containing 10 or fewer cases.
