MILWAUKEE – Supervisor
Ryan Clancy will introduce a resolution funding a “Right to Counsel” pilot program administered by Milwaukee County’s Housing Division through 2022.
“The Right to Counsel would be an important step forward at any time, but it is even more vital right now,” said Supervisor Clancy. “From school attendance, to lead levels in children, to job retention, it’s clear that keeping people in safe, stable housing is not only the right thing to do, but an incredibly efficient way of spending public dollars. The time is now to adopt the Right to Counsel in Milwaukee County.”
Right to Counsel programs provide tenants facing eviction free legal representation. Cities including Cleveland and New York City have implemented programs in recent years. Milwaukee County’s pilot program would provide a free attorney to any Milwaukee County household facing eviction or foreclosure.

What began with complaints about alterations to a mountain bike trail in Franklin may end with the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors giving itself new power over staff in the Milwaukee County Parks department.
The full board will soon consider legislation that would give it the authority and final approval of any major alterations made to bike trails in Milwaukee County. The legislation defines a major alteration as 20% of a trail or more. If the extent of the alteration cannot be determined, the director of the parks department must then consult with the county supervisor representing that area.

A new ordinance before the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors would require Milwaukee County Parks to get approval from the board to establish new bike trails or alter 20% or more of an existing trail.
“This is not an anti-mountain-biking resolution. … All we’re saying is the parks committee and the board should have oversight, especially when there’s such a new change,” said County Supervisor Anthony Staskunas, one of the co-sponsors of the ordinance that passed the board's Parks, Energy and Environment Committee Tuesday and will now go before the full board.

When additional fees are added in, however, the total jumps to about $484.
A $1 penalty would really cost $142.26 once fees and surcharges are included, according to a court official. The new penalty also would apply to possession of drug paraphernalia ordinance violations.
There were 187 county marijuana tickets issued in 2019, according to the resolution.
Under the existing ordinance, “some individuals may not be able to afford the fine and fees associated with a marijuana possession citation, which may result in their case being sent to collections or an increased charge, which is less likely to be collected by Milwaukee County and can affect an individual’s financial situation, including their credit scores,” the resolution said.
