Defendant in Leavenworth bridge shooting case still awaiting evaluation

The Leavenworth Times A man accused of shooting at people last year on the Centennial Bridge is still awaiting a mental health evaluation at a state hospital. A status hearing for Jason R. Westrem was continued Friday because the defendant has not yet received the evaluation at a state hospital in Larned, according to court records. The hearing was continued until June 4. Westrem, 38, Houston Lake, Missouri, is charged in Leavenworth County District Court with nine felony counts including attempted first-degree murder in connection to a May 27, 2020, incident on the Centennial Bridge. The bridge stretches across the Missouri River from north Leavenworth to Platte County, Missouri.

Hearing continued in Leavenworth County indecent liberties case

The Leavenworth Times A hearing to discuss the competency of a rural Easton man who faces charges of indecent liberties with children has been continued until next month. The hearing for Donald R. Jackson Sr. was continued until May 28 because the defendant has not yet undergone an evaluation. Jackson, 62, has two criminal cases pending against him in Leavenworth County District Court. In each case, he faces a charge of aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The crimes are alleged to have occurred in 2019. The cases involve different victims, according to court records. District Judge Gerald Kuckelman ordered a competency evaluation for Jackson last month at the request of defense attorney Thomas Bath.
