CHALMETTE, La. A St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office employee was fired in February for allegedly stealing $40,000 in sales tax collections after an independent auditor discovered the funds were missing.
A new report released Monday by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor says the employee worked in the sales tax collection office and was alleged to have altered receipts and misappropriated sales taxes paid in cash.

BATON ROUGE - According to the office of the Louisiana Legislative Auditor, a recent analysis of financial records belonging to the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) exposed serious discrepancies.
Auditors say LWC made approximately $6.2 million in state and federal Unemployment Insurance payments to 1,195 incarcerated individuals who do not appear to have been eligible for the benefits.
Under LWC’s policy, incarcerated individuals are not eligible to receive unemployment benefits because they are unable to obtain employment, which is required by state law.

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - An audit conducted by the Louisiana Legislative Auditorâs Office reveals the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) paid millions of dollars in unemployment funds to prisoners.
The audit, released Monday shows the agency responsible for handling unemployment funds gave out more than $6 million in benefits to 1,195 incarcerated individuals who did not qualify for the program.
Those improper payments were made between January to November 2020. According to the findings, 92 inmates received only one week of benefits but more than a thousand inmates received more than one week of benefits. According to an analysis from auditors, Louisiana’s nursing facilities faced staffing challenges throughout the pandemic due to staff exposure to COVID-19, illness, or the need to care for family members.
Auditors say that in addition to this, nursing facilities did not have adequate access to certain types of personal protective equipment at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
