Man arrested after shots fired in Hazleton

Updated: 6:03 PM EST December 13, 2020 HAZLETON, Pa. A man is behind bars after allegedly firing several gunshots early Sunday morning in Luzerne County. On Dec. 13, around 6:00 a.m., officers of Hazleton City Police Department responded to the area of 20th Street and Locust Street for a report of approximately eight gunshots being fired in the area. The suspect has been identified as Yelfrinso Nunez-Cruz, 27, of Hazleton. Investigators say Cruz fired the shots in the middle of the intersection before taking off. Officers later found him in a nearby yard. Multiple charges were filed against Cruz for the incident. He is locked up at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility after failing to post bail.

Luzerne County government shifts to limited in-person services

Many Luzerne County government offices will have limited in-office staff and will operate by appointment only following the most recent COVID-19 mitigation rules released by Gov. Tom Wolf. Those seeking county services are asked to call offices ahead of time or visit the county’s website, luzerne county.org, since most staff will be working remotely. “For any employee or member of the public that must come to our buildings, please be sure to practice safe distancing, good hygiene and know that our buildings all are under enhanced cleaning protocol to assist in minimizing risk,” the county said in a news release.

Sugar Notch man charged with killing his mother

Police charged a Sugar Notch man with killing his mother following an altercation at their home early Sunday morning. Erik M. Watkins, 39, faces an open charge of criminal homicide in connection with the death of his mother, Patricia Watkins, 60. He allegedly confessed to killing his mother after hearing voices that told him to attack her, according to police. State police at Wyoming received a phone call at about 1:50 a.m. Sunday from Jeremy Brodbeck, of 301 Maffett St., Sugar Notch, according to a criminal complaint against Erik Watkins. Brodbeck is the brother of Erik Watkins and the son of Patricia Watkins, according to the complaint, filed by state police.
