St. Louis County Attorney: Use of Deadly Force Justified in Mt. Iron Officer-Involved Shooting

MT. IRON, Minn. – The St. Louis County Attorney’s Office has ruled that the use of deadly force was justified in a December officer-involved shooting in Mt. Iron.
The ruling is in connection to a December 5, 2020 incident, when Deputy Ryan Smith and Deputy Matt Tomsich were involved in a shooting that killed 19-year-old Estavon Dominick Elioff.
According to the report, a two-tier outside review was conducted.
The first in-depth review was performed by Vemon D. Swanum, a retired prosecutor.
The second tier review consisted of Washington County Attorney Peter Orput.

With a charge of obstruction of the legal process dismissed, former Nisswa Mayor Fred Heidmann is now arguing he should also be cleared of a final charge of disorderly conduct.

A Two Harbors man admitted he was under the influence of alcohol when he caused a hit-and-run crash that injured five people in Midway Township this summer.
Rodney Drake Scandin Jr., 36, pleaded guilty Friday in State District Court in Duluth to five felony charges of criminal vehicular operation in the June 27 incident at Midway and Stark roads.
Authorities said a Subaru car occupied by four family members was stopped and waiting to turn onto Stark Road when it was rear-ended by Scandin s Ford F-150 pickup truck. The Subaru was thrown sideways into the southbound lane of Midway Road, where it was T-boned by an oncoming Chevrolet pickup truck with an attached trailer.
