An outbreak of a new COVID-19 variant at an Eastern Kentucky nursing home has sent five residents to the hospital.  Dr. Steven Stack, the state s public health commissioner, said Tuesday vaccination appears to have markedly reduced symptomatic disease in the 41 infected people.  Stack said 85% of the residents and 48% of the health care staff were vaccinated at this site. Gov. Andy Beshear said it s too early to identify the site beyond that it is in Eastern Kentucky.  Stack said there is a  notable comparison with how many vaccinated versus unvaccinated people were hospitalized in this outbreak.  Of the 71 vaccinated residents at this facility, one is in the hospital, while four of the 13 unvaccinated residents were hospitalized. In other words, four of the five patients hospitalized were unvaccinated while one was vaccinated, per Stack.
