Retired Rice County deputy charged with drunk driving, excessive speed

The mayor of Elysian, a former Rice County deputy sheriff, is facing drunken driving charges in Le Sueur County Court after he allegedly was pulled over for traveling at excessive speeds in April. Thomas Edward McBroom Sr., 62, was charged Monday with two gross misdemeanor counts of third-degree DWI, one misdemeanor count for careless driving and one petty misdemeanor count for speeding. The charges stem from an incident that occurred on April 16. According to the criminal complaint, a deputy with the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop at 10:35 p.m. April 16 of a single vehicle traveling eastbound on Hwy. 60 after receiving a speed reading of 97 mph in a 65 zone. The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as McBroom, and smelled a strong odor of alcohol emitting from inside the vehicle. Elysian s Mayor Tom McBroom was recently charged in Le Sueur County Court with two counts of third-degree DWI, one count of speeding, and one count of careless driving after being pulled over in April by a Le Sueur County Sheriff s Deputy on Highway 60. The deputy pulled McBroom over for speeding April 16th on Highway 60. KSTP-TV reports that after the deputy had pulled McBroom over that  the deputy smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the truck. McBroom allegedly initially told the deputy that he hadn t had any alcohol to drink, but that he admitted to speeding, telling the deputy that he had been speeding 70 to 80 miles per hour on his way to Elysian after being in Faribault at a retirement party.

A news release from the Le Sueur County Sheriff s Office indicates deputies responded to a rural home just northeast of Le Center after a fire was reported at the property around 7:15 a.m. A resident of the home, identified as 64-year-old Bruce Traxler, was found dead at the scene. The Sheriff s Office says the investigation led to the arrest of 25-year-old Hardy Wills-Traxler. He is expected to be formally arraigned on second-degree murder and arson charges in Le Sueur County Court tomorrow.
