May 29 A person is dead after wrecking a vehicle near Batesburg-Leesville in Lexington County. Just after midnight, the driver of a 2001 GMC Yukon ran off the right side of Brodie Road near Yorkshire Court, the South Carolina Highway Patrol reported. That's about 3 miles outside central Batesburg-Leesville. The driver struck an embankment, flipping the vehicle, and hit a tree, a trooper said. .

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The Lexington County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was fatally shot in West Columbia, officials say.
According to the West Columbia Police Department, the shooting occurred at 12:17 p.m. on Luke Street. That’s off 12th Street near Sunset Boulevard.
Officials say 30-year-old Harkeem Quaman Akins suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body. Akins was transported from the scene to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased upon arrival.

COLUMBIA, S.C. A community honored four unclaimed veterans on Friday morning by having a funeral service at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
The American Legion Riders and the Patriot Guard Riders escorted the remains of the veterans to the cemetery at 11 a.m. Through the course of investigating their deaths, the Lexington County Coroner s Office determined these men either had no living relatives or their relatives were unable to provide funeral services, the Lexington County Coroner s Office said in a press release. It is a great honor for us to be involved in ensuring that these veterans receive the posthumous respect earned through their service and sacrifice to our nation.
