(LEX 18) — Fresh fruits and vegetables are essential to a healthy diet but acquiring them costs more than processed foods, an issue the Kentucky Department of Agriculture has been trying to solve for more than a decade and now is offering to veterans. The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program allows qualifying seniors to use vouchers at farmers markets all over the state to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey. The Agriculture Department started an additional arm as a pilot program in the spring of 2021 in four counties catering just to veterans. The counties include Christian, Hardin, Madison and Fayette.

I called every single person that reached out to me about unemployment insurance whether I knew them or not, and I ll tell you I knew a lot fewer people than I did know, said Coleman who spoke with us while she visited Lexington Senior Center Thursday afternoon. In March, WDRB-TV obtained Coleman s text messages to the then head of the Office of Unemployment Insurance. LEX 18 obtained the same information. In at least four instances last April, Coleman reached out to the then-executive director asking for special attention to certain people s claims, including her hairdresser.

The bingo hall opened Monday and before noon people were stopping in to play. A penny per card per card, and lots of fun No one is going to get rich, but the game is for fun and friendships. It costs a penny per every bingo card per game. Carlos and Sandy Gillam of Mansfield found a table and two chairs and setup their bingo supplies. Bingo cards are offered at the event center. When asked how they knew the place opened, Carlos said he and his wife know Kathy from playing bingo with her elsewhere. Kathy Boyle said she used to work bingo games at the Mansfield Elks Club and she plays bingo and euchre at various center seniors on certain days around the area.
