The vaccine s distribution varies not only by age, but among different racial groups and gender.  As of Thursday, 22,459 people in Polk County had received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the latest Florida Department of Health vaccination report. Of this group, 1,906 people had completed the two-shot series.  Both vaccines authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration require two doses, administered between 21 and 28 days apart to be considered 95% effective.  Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has placed a high statewide priority on vaccinating seniors first, or individuals age 65 and older, during this first phase of the vaccine s rollout.
