Lakewood Ranch launched an app to help residents stay connected and get the latest updates on activities and events.
The new app will provide the community’s 42,000 residents and 1,600 businesses with a new way to exchange information. The app, offered on Google and Apple sites, is a mobile extension of the popular myLWR.com website. During the coronavirus pandemic, Lakewood Ranch has offered virtual programming, including concerts, fitness and wellness classes, as well as family nights, happy hours and more.
According to a news release, the new app will help promote health and fitness by encouraging outdoor recreation, and it offers a list of all Lakewood Ranch parks, trails and a bike map. Lakewood Ranch Medical Center is one of the five main sponsors of both the community’s website and the app.
Now, the frontline respiratory therapy team member who treated the Manatee County resident in his 60s is slated to be among the first to receive the first of two doses of the Moderna Vaccine for COVID-19 on Thursday.
“These caregivers will be receiving the vaccine almost 10 months to the day the first patient was diagnosed,” said Monica Yadav, the director of PR and communications for Doctors Hospital. “This is a pretty big deal.”
The first recipients were set to roll up their sleeves at 7 a.m. Thursday in Doctors Hospital’s Medical Office Building, with the hospital’s chief of nursing vaccinating the team.
The first shipment of the Emergency Use Authorization Moderna COVID-19 vaccine arrived at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center Wednesday and Emergency Department Clinical Leader Vanessa Spingola was the first frontline health care worker there to receive the immunization.
When Governor Ron DeSantis said last week that Lakewood Ranch Medical Center would be one of the hospitals receiving the Moderna vaccine, the hospital s healthcare workers began signing up for immunizations.
A release by the hospital said additional vaccine shipments are anticipated in the coming weeks. The hospital did not release the number of workers vaccinated.

According to Governor Ron DeSantis, the vaccine will be distributed to 173 hospitals in Florida, including nearly 50 in the Tampa Bay area. Since the Moderna vaccine does not require the same ultra-cold storage as the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, it can be delivered to more hospitals. DeSantis says the Moderna vaccine will be available in 43 counties in the state.
Like the Pfizer vaccine, Moderna’s clinical trials showed it to be 94% effective at protecting against coronavirus. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine requires a second follow-up dose and each vaccine has its own narrow window of time for a patient to get that second dose.
