The winners of a statewide photography contest held this spring to celebrate and promote positive, realistic images of the diverse aging experience in Maine will be announced June 4 in a Maine Gerontological Society Facebook Live event.
Focus on Real Aging in Maine (FRAME) attracted 82 entries from amateur and professional photographers of people in Maine ages 50 and older. The 10:30 a.m. prize presentation on June 4 will feature three awards for amateur photographers and three awards for professional photographers. Six Maine amateur and professional photographers judged the respective entries.
Prizes include contributions to the winnerâs charity or nonprofit of choice, cash awards and gifts from Maine businesses.
The University of Maine Center on Aging has received an AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP grant to support 119 volunteers serving in Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Washington counties, where the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) program has provided service opportunities for people ages 55 and older since 2003.
The AmeriCorps Seniors RSVP program was awarded $99,202 for the first year of a six-year funding cycle. Every six years, RSVP programs undergo a competitive grant process. This new award permits the UMaine Center on Aging to continue to oversee RSVP under the leadership of its longtime director Paula Burnett.

The Mayer-Rothschild Foundation has awarded funding to the University of Maine Center on Aging and The Cedars, a nonprofit retirement community in South Portland, to identify and promote the best practices for person-centered care in nursing homes, independent and assisted living facilities and dementia and memory care residences.
The foundationâs first Designation of Excellence in Person-Centered Long-Term Care Award allows both organizations to develop a national standard for person-centered care and optimal strategies for facilities to implement it. The designation of excellence they create will serve as a promotional tool for institutions that adopt best practices for this model of care.
