The National Weather Service measures snow depth at 7 a.m. each day there is any at Lehigh Valley International Airport.
On Thursday, the figure was 11 inches at the Hanover Township, Lehigh County, facility while an 11.5-inch storm was wrapping up.
What are the chances 1 inch of that remains come early on Dec. 25?
The weather service calls it a White Christmas if there is that much or more snow on the ground at that hour on Christmas morning. It doesn’t have to fall that day although it does every now and again, since the holiday arrives closer to January than November.

PHILADELPHIA - Residents across most of the region dug their way out of a wintry mess left behind by a mid-December nor easter Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Depending on where you live, you may have woken up to a foot or more of snow, or just a few wet and slushy inches.
The Lehigh Valley and suburbs to the north and west saw close to a foot or more.
Further south, the Philadelphia International Airport is reporting more than 6 inches of snow, while parts of Chester County are reporting 8-9 inches.

The snowstorm that will bring the region to a stop overnight is expected to begin between 2 and 3 p.m. in Lehigh and Northampton counties as the nastiness arrives from the southwest, a local meteorologist said early in the afternoon.
Extremely dry conditions in advance of the storm the dew point was 12 with a temperature of 24 degrees at 11:51 a.m. at Lehigh Valley International Airport were expected to give way as moisture builds, Allentown-based EPAWA Weather Consulting meteorologist Bobby Martrich said.

He expects the Lehigh Valley which once was the “sweet spot” for an all-snow storm to be the “battleground” for how far north this touch of warm air reaches as a serious winter storm pounds the area.
