WASHINGTON - Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Washington breaks ground on the new Wargaming Center at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico. A ceremony commemorating the beginning of construction was held at MCB Quantico May 12. “[Marines] are going to be better prepared to fight and thrive in combat because of the work that is done in this Center.” said Lt. Gen. Eric M. Smith, deputy commandant, Combat Development and Integration, Headquarters, U.S. Marine Corps. “We are going to be quicker getting resources to them in the Fleet and in the field because of this Center.” In March 2019, the Wargaming Center was identified to NAVFAC Washington leadership as a military construction (MILCON) insert in the fiscal year 2020 program. The NAVFAC Washington Contracting team went to work to ensure timely and efficient awarding of this critical construction project. New hangar for squadrons at NAS Key West > United States Navy > News-Stories

Upon completion, the new hangar will replace the current one that houses Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 106 Key West Detachment – F/A-18 E/F Super Hornets and adversaries Fighter Squadron Composite (VFC) 111, who fly F-5N Tiger II aircraft. “Thanks to NAVFAC’s diligence and expertise, we’re finally getting started on this much-needed project leftover from Hurricane Irma,” said NAS Key West Commanding Officer Capt. Mark Sohaney. “A new hangar will greatly enhance our mission to support warfighters, and it’s exciting to know that its capabilities will put the air station at the forefront of Naval Aviation training.” An aircraft maintenance hangar is designed and built with the sole purpose of conducting major aircraft repairs, as opposed to routine aviation maintenance and general servicing.

New ATC Tower coming to NAS Whiting Field s North Field > United States Navy > News-Stories

The new ATC tower will replace the current tower, which is not suited to meet the demanding fixed wing training requirements for the Navy. “We’re excited about the award for the new North Field ATC tower at NAS Whiting Field,” said NAS Whiting Field Commanding Officer Capt. Paul Flores. “This will allow our air traffic controllers to work and support our aviation training mission in a facility that meets Navy air training and operations requirements and provides a better working environment for our Sailors.” The current ATC tower is too small to support the mission. Air traffic controllers work within a tight space that should be twice the size given the amount of staffing required. Any disruptions in the training pipeline, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, would have a catastrophic impact on the output of naval fixed wing pilots.
