Debris rained down as the sharp teeth of an excavator bucket chewed at the concrete innards of a three-story, brick-faced building. A man in heavy work clothes and a hard hat sprayed water from a hose to keep the dust down. That was the scene Monday as contractors began tearing down the former Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority “Big 8′ apartment complex on West 25th Street in Ohio City, a block south of Detroit Avenue. After more than a decade of planning, dreaming, designing, and grant-writing, the demolition marked the first highly visible step toward the creation of a 23-acre park at Irishtown Bend overlooking the Cuyahoga River and the downtown skyline.

news@tribtoday.com Warren was one of 11 northeast Ohio communities to be awarded $183 million in financing from Ohio EPA to do wastewater and drinking water infrastructure projects. Warren’s wastewater division has been authorized to use $44.9 million in loans for Phase 1 of an improvement project at the city’s pump stations and wastewater treatment plant, according to the city’s Wastewater Division director. The city has not received money but the authorization to pay for the projects, according to Ed Haller, director of the city’s Water Pollution Control division. Phase 1 of the plant and pump station capital improvement plan is designed to refurbish both the South Leavitt and Main Avenue pump stations, install a new septic receiving station and refurbish the plant screen building and refurbish the balance of the primary settling tanks and clarifiers, as well as updating the process monitoring and electrical systems.

Olmsted Township Zoning Commission members will recommend to township trustees that they deny a rezoning request critical to the project. The Board of Trustees has the final decision. According to the township administrator, it is uncertain if the zoning commission will have its formal recommendation prepared and submitted to the board by the board’s next meeting on Feb. 10. Trustees have 30 days to schedule a hearing after they receive it.
