The department used thermal cameras to help determine where trespassing on railroad tracks has been the biggest problem. New ramp at U S 321 and I-85 still delayed

Drivers on U.S. 321 will continue to wait, at least for now, for the opening of a new ramp to Interstate 85 North.  The North Carolina Department of Transportation said this week it does not have a clear timeframe for the opening of Ramp D, its new light controlled access to I-85 North for both north and southbound drivers on U.S. 321.  Weather delays have plagued the last months of the project, putting it at least two months behind schedule, said DOT spokesman Marcus Thompson.  The work is part of a $15.6 million project designed to improve the flow of traffic at the heavily used intersection. Agency engineers said more than 100,000 vehicles per day travel that stretch of I-85, and half that many on U.S. 321, as commuters motor between Hickory and Charlotte.
