RALEIGH (WTVD) The COVID-19 pandemic may be keeping more people off the road, but alcohol, speed and distracted driving remain endemic to American society.
Statistically, the days before and after Christmas are more dangerous for North Carolina drivers than any other holiday weekend except for Thanksgiving. According to the NC Department of Transportation, the five year average of 1,927 crashes lead to a yearly average of 10 deaths and more than 900 injuries.
So far in 2020, a head-on collision in Johnston County Friday night killed two, including a 78-year-old man. Across the country, the National Safety Council estimates that 340 people may be killed on the roadways during the Christmas holiday driving period.

Teens across the country waiting anxiously to get their driver’s licenses were disappointed when most state motor vehicle departments suspended road testing for weeks and sometimes for months after the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March.

Be careful on your way to work in the morning, as overnight winter weather could cause hazardous conditions along roads in eastern North Carolina. A winter weather advisory has already been issued in Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Forsyth, Granville, Guilford, Orange, Person, and Randolph counties from midnight to noon Wednesday (December 16).
Freezing rain overnight could cause up to a quarter-inch of ice in some areas, but the majority of the counties will experience rain, especially toward Alexander, Burke, Catawba, Cleveland, Iredell, and Lincoln.
Durham Public Schools and Granville County have already announced a two-hour delay for Wednesday, and end of the year testing for City of Medicine Academy, Middle College at Durham Tech, and New Tech high schools will be rescheduled. Person County and Alamance-Burlington schools will operate remotely.
