Brent Montgomery has been battling the virus since February.
The community held a fundraiser recently in Henderson, to help raise money for his family.
According to Vance County Fire Department, Montgomery has now died from the virus.
In a statement, the fire department praised Montgomery as an honorable man who others strived to be like.
On Tuesday, troopers escorted Montgomery s body from Duke University Hospital to Granville County.
Troopers will honor their fallen brother by wearing mourning bands in honor of him until 11:59 p.m. on the day of his funeral.

VANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) - The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is mourning the loss of one of its troopers.
Master Trooper James âBrentâ Montgomery died Monday after battling COVID-19 for more than a month.
Troopers are honoring Montgomery by wearing mourning bands in honor of him until 11:59 pm on the day of his funeral.
