Greensboro, N.C. The Northern Guilford Nighthawks defeated the Northern Durham Knights in six innings by a 10-0 margin on Thursday night to advance to the Eastern regional semifinal.
The Nighthawks were able to trigger the run rule thanks to a strong starting pitching performance by James Newsome and a consistent offensive attack that produced runs in four of the six innings.
Newsome worked around a one-out double in the top of the first, and the Nighthawks got runners on base and scored a pair of runs on a wild pitch and a passed ball to take control of the game early with a 2-0 lead.

With just five minutes remaining, it looked like Mount Tabor s girls lacrosse team was going to grind out a first-round playoff win over visiting Northern Guilford on Monday. The Spartans led 9-7 and held the Nighthawks scoreless over the first 20 minutes of the second half, dominating possession over that stretch.
Instead, Northern Guilford roared back with two goals in the final five minutes of regulation and a sudden-death goal in overtime to steal the 10-9 victory and advance to the second round.
Leading the attack for the Nighthawks (9-4, 8-3 Conference 9) was the senior trio of Ava Spradley (three goals, one assist), Bailey Marsh (three goals) and Hannah McMasters (two goals).
