A NORTH-EAST doctor is making a powerful New Year plea to smokers – make 2021 the year you quit and don’t wait to have regrets. It comes as new figures show that quit success rates this year among those who tried were higher than at any point since 2007. Nearly half (48 per cent) of all 18-24 year old smokers made a quit attempt in the last year. This is believed to be the highest quit rate since 2007 when the age of sale was increased to 18 and England introduced comprehensive indoor smokefree legislation. Data released earlier in 2020 shows the Covid-19 pandemic led to a surge in quitting with around million people making a quit attempt during the first national lock down.

Cumbria has now been placed under the strictest local Covid restrictions, amid spiralling infection rates and a stark warning over the serious pressures being placed on the county s hospitals. The entire county is, from today, under Tier four restrictions. This means that Cumbrian residents must now stay in their homes, unless they have a specific and sanctioned reason to leave. All non-essential shops and all hospitality businesses across the county must now be closed. Just yesterday, Cumbria was still under much more lenient Tier two restrictions, leaving residents and businesses little time to prepare for the drastic change. Nevertheless, yesterday s Government announcement on the tighter restrictions was welcomed by Cumbria s public health director, Colin Cox.
Covid-19 infection rates in Carlisle and Eden continue to spiral, potential for Tier 4 restrictions in Cumbria
Worrying: Public health director Colin Cox “Deeply concerning” is how Cumbria’s director of public health has described the current coronavirus situation in the county, as infection rates spiral and suggestions are made widely in the national media that the county could be heading straight for Tier 4 restrictions. Colin Cox said he was very concerned about the upward trend in Covid-19 cases seen in north Cumbria’s hospitals, and the rapidly rising infection rates in north Cumbria - particularly in the Carlisle and Eden districts.
Cumbria to move into Tier four Covid-19 restrictions Cumbria will be placed in Tier four Covid-19 restrictions, following a rapid rise in coronavirus infections in the county. The change was announced by the Government this afternoon, following a Government review of local Covid restrictions in place across England. Tier four restrictions will be effective from tomorrow. They will apply to the entire county. Many other parts of the north, including Lancashire and the north east, having also been placed under Tier four restrictions. Announcing the new measures this afternoon, the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, said that sharply rising cases, and the hospitalisations that follow, demonstrate the need to act where the virus is spreading.
