WHEELING Those in the Northern Panhandle with smaller incomes looking to buy their first home still have the opportunity for funding to help make that dream come true.
The Northern Panhandle Home Consortium has again been given a six-figure grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the 2021 fiscal year. Of the $305,207 the group has received, $228,000 will go to “eligible affordable housing activities,” Melissa Thompson, community development specialist for the city of Wheeling, said earlier this month.
Northern Panhandle residents with low to moderate incomes can get up $10,000 from the First-Time Homebuyer Program. That money can go toward a down payment and closing costs.

The Northern Panhandle Home Consortium again has funding to assist lower-income residents wanting to be first-time homebuyers.
Melissa Thompson, community development specialist for the city of Wheeling, said the consortium has been told it will receive a $305,207 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for fiscal year 2021.
Of this amount, $228,000 will be designated for “eligible affordable housing activities,” she said.
This includes the First-Time Homebuyer Program, which provides up to $10,000 for down payment and closing-cost assistance to those considered as having low to moderate incomes living in the Northern Panhandle.
