Florida hospitals to receive COVID vaccine for extremely vulnerable
Jeffrey Schweers
The state Department of Health is shifting 28,500 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to 27 hospitals around the state this week to immunize people under 65 who are considered extremely vulnerable if infected with the coronavirus.
The decision came Friday in response to a pressure campaign of emails, calls & interviews from constituents under 65 who have underlying medical conditions that put them at a higher risk than healthy seniors, State Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith, D-Orlando, tweeted on Saturday. It’s a sign that our advocacy efforts are working.
The DOH was able to allocate more resources to hospitals because of a 16% increase in shipments to the states ordered by President Biden, resulting in 307,000 first doses to Florida instead of the usual 266,000. The state also received 254,000 second doses.
