Complaints, which are as reliably annual as the blooming of the arbutus, are being made that seekers of this spring flower are following their usual tactics of taking bloom, stem and roots, thereby robbing the region of one of its big spring attractions. To cut the stems of arbutus brings about a healthy growth of the plant but to pull up the entire plant means that no plant will replace it next year. Although most of this destructive work is done by thoughtless children it is not uncommon to see older people who should have greater judgement come in town with great baskets of the flowers with the roots still attached. This is the surest possible method of robbing the Cadillac region of its arbutus.

A Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer on Sunday used a tourniquet to stop blood loss from a 22-year-old Scottville man, who was recovering Monday in an area hospital from an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The shooting occurred Sunday morning on U.S. Forest Service-managed land that is available for target shooting, east of Manistee in Manistee County.
Conservation Officer Scott MacNeill the first emergency responder on scene, spoke with the thankful man on Monday morning. To respect the man’s medical privacy, the DNR is not releasing his name.
According to MacNeill, the man told him: “Your tourniquet saved my life. If I had to wait for EMS I don’t know what I would have done.”

LAKE CITY â Missaukee County EMS is finding itself overextended by providing mutual aid ambulance services to Wexford County.
Mutual Aid services are commonly established to allow either county to help the other out when needed. Wexford County had an agreement with North Flight, now superseded by Mobile Medical Response (MMR) to provide ambulance services to that county.
However, the merger has not been without its hiccups, which Missaukee EMS director Aaron Sogge believes are due to a staffing shortage at MMR.
Missaukee EMS has been asked to cover calls at a rate that is no longer financially viable for the department, Sogge said. He said calls for Advanced Life Support and Basic Life Support are routinely called off. When they are called off it results in non-billable calls and costs for Missaukee staff overtime, fuel, vehicle maintenance and other expenses.
