Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie has told MPs the island needs the investment and jobs a Freeport would bring otherwise young people will continue to leave to find work elsewhere. Speaking in the Finance Bill debate, Virginia said she was concerned that, unless the Welsh Government started the Freeport bidding process, North Wales would lose out to English ports that are further ahead in the process. “Unfortunately, despite all the good reasons I have for bringing a Freeport to Anglesey, the Welsh bidding process has not yet started,” she told the House of Commons. “The Welsh First Minister has cited concerns about economic displacement, but my biggest concern is the economic displacement that will occur when trade that could have come to Anglesey goes instead to one of the eight English Freeports announced in the Chancellor’s Budget. Ports such as Liverpool are already six months ahead of us in this process, she added.
CEO, Comtek Network Systems UK Ltd and chair The DBF North Wales potential to lead the world in Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) is looking like a real possibility. The key requirement for entering the MRE technology sector is the region s geography, appropriate coastal conditions, waves, winds landscape, access to university research and an advanced manufacturing resource within the locality. North Wales is one of the few regions globally which possesses all of these requirements. The North Wales Economic Ambition Board (six councils), after many years of hard work and challenges, ultimately successfully persuaded the UK and Welsh governments to award North Wales with £240m. This fund may not seem a lot but is a good basis on which to entice much larger private sector investment in the various projects which will transform North Wales economy for good.

MINISTERS have been described as “dictators” for pressing on with proposals for another regional layer of government, referred to by councillors on Anglesey as “back door reorganisation”. The Welsh Government is pressing ahead with plans to create four regional bodies with powers to decide on where to build new housing developments and invest in transport across the respective areas. The four corporate joint committees (CJCs) would be created in the South-East, South-West, North and Mid Wales, while sitting on the committees would be the leaders of every contained council.
