Northwestern DA’s Office receives $120K to support domestic violence victims

NORTHAMPTON A $120,000 anti-violence grant awarded to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office will support the continuance of its Domestic Violence Intervention Project (DVIP), paying trained advocates who are available by cellphone to assist police responding to victims of domestic abuse.

When a 71-year-old woman in Orange was attacked and stabbed multiple times in her home Monday afternoon, her 15-year-old grandson was able to help fight the suspect off, according to police.
The woman is reportedly in stable condition after a medical helicopter flight to the trauma center at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Orange police said in a press release.
James Gonzalez, 29, who allegedly stabbed and punched the woman, is being charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a person 60 or over, assault to murder while armed on someone 60 or over, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, home invasion, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and assault and battery on a person 60 or over/disabled, according to the release.

A 71-year-old woman was stabbed at her home in Orange, Massachusetts, Monday, prosecutors said, and a man she knows has been arrested.
Prosecutors said the suspected stabber, 29-year-old James Gonzalez of Orange, was set to face charges of armed assault with intent to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon Tuesday, according to the Northwestern District Attorney s Office.
The woman was hospitalized but is expected to survive the stabbing that took place Monday afternoon, prosecutors said. They didn t provide more details about what s alleged to have taken place in the incident.

GREENFIELD The Children’s Advocacy Center of Franklin County and North Quabbin Inc. is collaborating with Clinical & Support Options (CSO) to offer a program for children who engage in problematic sexual behavior, or what was once more commonly labeled “child-on-child sexual abuse.”
Children’s Advocacy Center Case Manager and Multi-Disciplinary Team Facilitator Samantha Staelens said a large part of the program is psycho-education for caregivers, service providers and the community on normative sexual behavior and how to educate children in a way that doesn’t label them as “offenders” or “predators.”

ORANGE The two suspects in custody in connection with a shooting in Orange on Friday morning have been arraigned.
Orange Police Chief James Sullivan said that Conan Gentile was arraigned Friday on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (firearm), misleading a police investigation, intimidating a witness/juror/police/court official and illegal possession of a firearm. He is being held at the Franklin County House of Correction in Greenfield and will be back in Orange District Court on Jan. 26 for a dangerousness hearing.
Additionally, Michael Coleman, 40, of Townsend, was arraigned on two counts of interfering with a police investigation and one charge of accessory after the fact. He was being held at the Orange Police Station. Sullivan said Coleman was originally arrested in Westminster on outstanding warrants, and was arrested again Tuesday in connection with the shooting.
