Brooklyn Center mayor proposes major public safety changes
The resolution would create a committee to create policies and guidelines to make reforms happen, with a directive to present recommendations to the City Council within 180 days.

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott is proposing major changes to public safety in the Twin Cities suburb, nearly a month after the fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright during a traffic stop.
Elliott told residents at a meeting Saturday, May 8, that his proposal would add more tools to our toolbox to appropriately respond when members of our community are in grave need. And he urged city council members to act quickly to approve the measure.
The Red Sand Project is aimed at bringing awareness to human trafficking.

Central Lakes College is partnering with several community groups to host the Red Sand Project to bring awareness and take a stand against human trafficking.
The community is invited to Central Lakes College’s north main entrance 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. May 5 to see the Red Sand Project display. It is presented by CLC s Sexual Violence Prevention Committee in collaboration with WeARE, Safe Harbor and Sexual Assault Services.

The virtual event included Eric Harris, a field consultant on human trafficking.
The event was put on by USIâs Sexual Assault and Gender Violence Prevention Group and the Southwest Indiana Regional Coalition Against Trafficking.
Harris discussed the definition of human trafficking, vulnerable youth populations, how traffickers groom their victims, barriers to treatment, and overcoming the stigma of survivors.
âWhat we find is that a lot of people have heard of it, but they only think of being an international problem and not a local issue. We do in fact have local human trafficking as a problem in Indiana and in Evansville as well. As a part of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month, the University of Southern Indiana Sexual Assault and Gender Violence Prevention Group (SAGVP) in collaboration with the Southwest Indiana Regional Coalition Against Trafficking (SIRCAT) will host Field Consultant Eric Harris, BSW, for a virtual presentation about human trafficking awareness on January 28 at 6 p.m. CST.
