The husband-and-wife team who opened Sugarpine Drive-In in 2018 on the banks of the Sandy River about 2 miles to the north closed on the 1.5-acre site earlier this month, as first reported by
The Oregonian. Emily Cafazzo and Ryan Domingo plan to bring the restaurant back to its 1930s roadhouse roots following a ground-up rebuild that will include indoor and outdoor seating. Rehabilitating the business is part of the couple’s overall goal to reestablish the Historic Columbia River Highway as a culinary destination.

At the original Sugarpine Drive-In, business is up 120% compared to 2019. The restaurant is set to expand over the next two years, first with a new Hawaiian food truck, Da Pine Grinds, then by taking over the former Tippy Canoe property with a new roadhouse in 2022.Anna Spoerre

A large rockslide at the base of Elowah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge has added to the inaccessibility of one of the most beautiful and secluded waterfalls in the area, which continues to recover from the 2017 Eagle Creek fire.
Steve Kruger, Trailkeepers of Oregon’s executive director, said Saturday that the area is closed to the public until further notice and there’s no access to Gorge 400 Trail to Elowah Falls and the Upper McCord Creek Falls Trail.
Gresham man fired first at officers before being shot, investigators say

A Gresham man shot by law enforcement officers Saturday morning in Corbett fired at tactical teams after an all-night standoff, causing officers to return fire, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
A Multnomah County patrol sergeant saw a white Pontiac sedan speeding and traveling “erratically” on the Historic Columbia River Highway about 8:50 p.m. Friday and initiated a traffic stop, the sheriff’s office said.
The driver, identified Tuesday as Randy Scott Gattman, lost control of the car on a sharp corner and pulled over on East Knieriem Road, the sheriff’s office said. A Multnomah County deputy arrived shortly after.
