Cypress College student Cueva selected for inaugural #RealCollege Student Leadership Advisory Council

Cypress College student Catherine Cueva is one of 23 students nationwide selected as the inaugural cohort of #RealCollege’s Student Leadership Advisory Council. Cueva is the only member from the California Community Colleges and just one of four from the Golden State. California’s additional selections come from Fresno State University, California Polytechnic State University at Pomona, and the University of California Berkeley. In all, the 23 students attend 19 public institutions, eight community colleges, and four Historically Black Colleges and Universities.Three-quarters of the SLAC members identify as female and 87% are people of color. Cueva said she joined the Student Leadership Advisory Council “to help inform others about food insecurity, expecially on college campuses.” Her interest is an extension of her volunteer efforts providing Thanksgiving meals to those in need.

She moved to Montgomery to attend Alabama State Teachers College and, after graduating in 1941, she went on to get an MA degree from Columbia University in 1947.  She returned to teach Geography at her alma mater soon after, and became    secretary to the Women’s Political Council, an organization founded by a group of teachers at Alabama State University in 1947 to fight racial injustices and oppression in Montgomery. Though the best-known accounts of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, focus on the organizing actions of Martin Luther King Jr., and the resistance of Rosa Parks, the boycott had its genesis in work begun earlier, work in which the Women’s Political Council played key strategic and tactical roles.  In Mrs. Glass’ own words to an interviewer years later, “The men talked about it, you know, but we were ready to take action.”
