Residents and public officials in capital cities are holding their breath this weekend, as they prepare for potential armed protests leading up to the presidential inauguration. Richmond is no exception.
The city declared a State of Emergency Monday following FBI warnings and had already planned for large crowds, many carrying firearms as part of the annual pro-gun Lobby Day protest organized by the Virginia Citizen’s Defense League.
Capitol Square was closed to the public Thursday and will remain closed through at least Jan. 21.
The guardians of Virginia s seat of government are bracing for potential armed protests at the state Capitol in Richmond beginning on Sunday, as President-elect Joe Biden prepares for inauguration.

Black clergy with the Virginia Interfaith Center condemned the siege at the U.S. Capitol building. The group had scheduled a press conference Thursday morning to announce their support for abolishing the death penalty. The group tied much of Wednesday’s events to the country’s dark history of racism. The largely white group of pro-Trump extremists breached the capitol building with what appeared to be little resistance from law enforcement.
