Now, the first class of practitioners have graduated from a new residency program and are ready to begin their professional careers and almost all will do so in the community where they were trained.
It s the culmination of a plan begun at the former Harrison Medical Center to head off a growing shortage of Kitsap Peninsula primary care physicians by establishing something of a baseball-like farm system of homegrown talent. It’s easier to train doctors than to try and recruit them to the area, said Dr. Michael Watson, the director of the Northwest Family Medicine Residency Program based within Virginia Mason Franciscan s ambulatory care center off Kitsap Way.
