Over the weekend, a rare and beautiful lobster was saved from imminent demise: Found in a tank at the Red Lobster in Manassas, the lucky crustacean was plucked out before becoming a main dish. Staff noticed the unique pattern on the shell and, after dubbing their new friend Freckles, arranged to move the special specimen to the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News. It turns out it’s more than just a dazzling shell Freckles is a calico lobster, one of the rarest in the world, an estimated one in 30 million.

Good thing someone considered the lobster.
An extremely rare lobster was saved from a fate on a dinner plate at a Red Lobster restaurant located in Manassas, Va.
The Takeout reports how the specimen is what’s known as a calico lobster, so called because of its bespeckled shell. The website further explains how roughly one in every 30 million lobsters born end up with such coloring, its striking appearance fortunately allowing for people at the Red Lobster to take note of its special nature.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Spared from a pot of boiling water, the new star of the Virginia Living Museum now sits inside a cozy saltwater tank. As a person who loves all lobsters, it was very exciting, said Britt Sorensen, the museum s training and enrichment coordinator.
This lobster is, simply put, lucky. Lobsters are typically underrated, Sorenson said. People usually just walk by and think that it s tasty or looks scary.
But what passersby will soon see on display is Freckles, adorned with golden speckles.

MANASSAS, VA A rare calico colored lobster was discovered at a Red Lobster restaurant in Manassas. Calico lobsters are considered the third rarest lobsters in the world; only 1 in 30 million lobsters have calico coloring, according to a Red Lobster spokesperson.
Red Lobster donated the animal, affectionately called Freckles, to the Virginia Living Museum in Newport News. There, Freckles will join other animals as part of the museum s mission to educate visitors about the animals and habitats that are native to Virginia.
