High prices tempt farmers to cultivate more Boro

Farmers are showing an inclination towards cultivating more Boro paddy this season, tempted by higher prices prevailing in the market.
However, costs of labour, land lease, seed and fertiliser have also increased compared to that of last year, dampening their desires.
Take the instance of Khaja Mia of Milkipur village under Shibganj upazila of the northwest Bogura district.
The 48-year-old farmer doubled his cultivation area to 10 bighas of land after the Aman paddy he recently harvested fetched high prices compared to what he got the last time around.

The government has decided to import another 250,000 tonnes of rice from India and Singapore through the Directorate General of Food to control the domestic market. );

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase approved the proposal to buy the rice from overseas in a meeting on Wednesday.
Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal chaired the first meeting of the committee in the new year via video call from Singapore, said Abu Saleh Mostafa Kamal, additional cabinet secretary.
According to the approved proposal, the Directorate General of Food will buy 50,000 tonnes of non-Basmoti rice from India’s ETC agro Processing at Tk 1.71 billion, and the same amount of the grain from Singapore’s Agrocorp International at Tk 1.73 billion.

In a bid to boost food grain reserve, the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase yesterday approved a proposal for procuring 2.5 lakh tonnes of rice.
The price of rice is soaring in both retail and wholesale markets at a time when the government s rice reserve has gone down to 5.32 lakh tonnes as of January 4.
According to the food ministry, the total reserve of food grain was 7.27 lakh tonnes 5.32 lakh tonnes of rice and 1.95 lakh tonnes of wheat as of January 4, down from 13.83 lakh tonnes at the same time last year.

Any decision regarding onion imports will be taken considering the interests of both consumers and growers, said Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi.
A decision regarding fresh imports will be taken shortly, the commerce minister told reporters at his office yesterday.
Besides, consignments of onion for which letters of credit were issued earlier are now entering the country, he added.
The current import price of onion is about Tk 39 per kilogram.
Munshi s comments come at a time when the onion prices have dropped amid an increased supply of the cooking ingredient following the resumption of imports from India on Saturday.
