The US announcement to support the waiver of IP protection on Covid-19 vaccine has not been the good news that was previously expected.
Last Thursday (Wednesday in the US), I was probably not the only one waiting for something in US President Joe Biden s State of the Union speech to both houses of Congress. Something would be new, as Mr. Biden had promised that America would reintegrate into the world, a world in a pandemic, and in need of commitment and strong action from every country.

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal discussed the proposed waiver to provisions of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) for COVID-19-specific items and raising vaccine production with United States Trade Representative (USTR), Katherine Tai, in a virtually meeting on Friday.
During the meeting, Tai conveyed her deep sympathy for the people of India as the country battles a deadly wave of COVID-19 and reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to help India, the USTR said in a readout of the call.
