  Jul 25, 2021 11:19:34 AM Pacific leaders have called on the World Trade Organisation to waive intellectual property rights protection for technologies needed to prevent, contain and treat coronavirus in the region. Minister for Trade Faiyaz Koya said the waiver would ensure regional countries have access to vaccines including pursuing opportunities for complementary alternative medicines. Koya said leaders have pledged for 80 per cent of the eligible population across the Pacific to be vaccinated by the first quarter of 2022.  “All forum leaders have considered endorsing a coronavirus vaccination target of at least 80 percent of the eligible population across the Pacific by the first quarter of 2022,” he said.

  There is a need to further strengthen the region’s digital infrastructure. Minister for Trade Faiyaz Koya said regional leaders are aware of the impact coronavirus have had on enterprise digitalisation and e-commerce adoption. Koya said this need includes incentivising investments in digital connectivity, computing capabilities, payments systems, and new innovative business models.  “At the height of the coronavirus crisis, many global supply chains for food and medicine were disrupted due to border closures and other export restrictions,” he said. “Thus, a strong digital infrastructure must be complemented by robust supply chain capabilities to ensure timely fulfilment of orders. “We have to ensure that our policies remain consistent and effective. It is critical that our strategies enable our businesses to continue to operate with minimal disruptions,” he said.
